The importance of a door handle. Yes they’re an essential, even utility item, but they should be both practical and interesting, I feel.
Beautiful or interesting door furniture can make a fairly ordinary door into something special. The simple decoration and contrast of black on white makes this one interesting.
It’s perhaps not surprising that I notice these interior design details, but I find doors and door handles fascinating on more than one level…
An oak interior door and delicate yet functional door handle at Blackwell, the arts and crafts house on the edge of Windermere. Managed by the Lakeland Arts Trust, this is one of my favourite houses and places.
Another house visited – Ightham Mote in Kent – and another metal door handle. This one pre-dates the Blackwell one by a couple of hundred years and wasn’t made primarily for its stylishness. But there is a lightness of touch that enables us to see where some of the Arts and Crafts inspiration came from.
It’s not a door handle, but I do love my dragon torque doorknocker. Found when in Suffolk on holiday years ago when the offspring were much younger, it has graced my front door through three colour changes. And it still gives me pleasure on a daily basis

This old outbuilding with its rusty hinge and solid wooden door handle – door latch really – may look abandoned, but is still in use
another bit of rust on the metal studs and on the handle of another old wooden door. I am always the person who stops at the entrance to a castle or the bistro pub to look at the door handle. My only failing ( in my eyes anyway ) is that I don’t always get to take a photo…
